Megan's Dating Tip: Be romantic. Don't be afraid to show your affection and attraction to your date. Compliment them, touch them, kiss them, hug them. Make them feel special and desired.

Let’s be real: in a world that’s constantly talking about dating, the pure joy of a great platonic friendship is seriously underrated. Finding your person—that buddy you can text with a random thought, call for a vent session, or just sit in comfortable silence with—is one of life’s biggest wins.

I’ve been making and nurturing friendships here in Sacramento for a while, and I’ve discovered that this city is practically built for awesome "friend dates." It’s got the perfect mix of chill vibes, fun activities, and amazing food. If you're looking for some great spots to hang out with your platonic soulmate, here are some of my go-tos.

For the Low-Key Catch-Up

These are the spots for those essential "let's just talk for three hours" hangs.

  • The Coffee Shop Tour: We are blessed with amazing coffee shops that are perfect for deep conversations. My favorites are Temple Coffee, where you can get seriously nerdy about beans, or Old Soul Co. in the alley for that perfect rustic, hidden-gem vibe. The constant buzz means you can talk without feeling like everyone is listening.

  • A Brewery Patio: Nothing says "casual hang" like sitting on a sunny patio with a good beer or cider. Drake's: The Barn in West Sac is epic for this—grab a drink, sit on the lawn, and people-watch. For something more central, the patio at Device Brewing or Fieldwork in Midtown is always a solid choice. It's social without the pressure.

  • Capitol Park: This is my favorite free activity. Grab a coffee to-go and just walk. You can wander through the World Peace Rose Garden, admire the massive old trees, and find a bench to solve all the world’s problems.

For When You Want to Get Moving

Sometimes the best talks happen when you're doing something active.

  • The American River Parkway: This is the city's greatest treasure. You can bike for miles, go for a long walk or run, or just bring a couple of chairs and set up by the water. There’s no pressure, just fresh air and plenty of space to chat while you move.

  • Pipeworks Climbing Gym: Want to build some literal and figurative trust with your friend? Go climbing! It’s a super fun, collaborative workout where you get to cheer each other on. Plus, figuring out a tough route together is a great bonding experience.

  • Floating the River: The quintessential Sacramento summer ritual. Get a small group of friends, rent a raft, pack a cooler, and spend the afternoon drifting down the American River. It's a full-day commitment to pure, lazy fun.

For the Foodie Friends

If your friendship is built on a shared love of amazing food, this city is your playground.

  • Midtown Farmers Market: This is a perfect Saturday morning friend date. Start with a coffee, wander through the stalls, sample everything, and maybe grab some fresh produce to cook a meal together later. It’s an activity and a meal all in one.

  • Brunch, Obviously: Brunch is the official meal of friendship. You can’t go wrong with the iconic and eclectic Tower Cafe (the French toast is legendary). For a classic diner experience, The Morning Fork is amazing. Just be prepared to wait in line together—more time to talk!

  • Food Truck Mania: Keep an eye out for SactoMoFo (Sacramento Mobile Food) events. It’s the best way to solve the "what do you want to eat?" debate. You can both grab something different from the amazing lineup of trucks and find a spot to eat and hang out.

For a Dose of Culture or Fun

When you want an activity that’s a little more structured.

  • A River Cats Game: Head over the bridge to Sutter Health Park for a minor league baseball game. It’s super relaxed, the tickets are affordable, and there’s plenty of downtime between innings to just chat and enjoy the classic ballpark atmosphere.

  • Coin-Op Game Room: Unleash your inner kids with some friendly competition. This retro arcade and bar is perfect for a loud, fun night of Skee-Ball, Pac-Man, and classic pinball.

  • Second Saturday Art Walk: On the second Saturday of each month, galleries in Midtown and beyond open their doors for a massive art walk. It's a free, fun way to feel a little cultured, see some great local art, and wander through the neighborhood.

Sacramento is a fantastic city for building and enjoying friendships. It’s big enough to always have something new to do but small enough to feel like home. So grab your bestie and get out there!
