Megan's Dating Tip: Be flexible. Don't be too rigid or demanding about your expectations or plans. Be willing to compromise and try new things. Sometimes the best moments are spontaneous and unexpected.

Hey girl! Welcome to Dallas. Let's sit down and have a real talk about the dating scene here, because it can feel like a bit of a maze at first. While the city has a huge, visible gay scene, it can sometimes feel dominated by the boys. But trust me, the queer women are here—we’re thriving, and we have our own amazing spaces. You just have to know where to look.

As your friendly neighborhood lesbian who's been around the block, here is my personal guide to meeting women, knowing the city, and planning dates that are actually romantic and fun.

Where to Meet Queer Women: Let's Find Our People

Finding your community is the first step. While we can be found everywhere, from Target to the dog park, there are a few places where the odds are ever in your favor.

  • The Beating Heart: Sue Ellen's Let's start with the mothership. Sue Ellen's in the Oak Lawn neighborhood is one of the oldest lesbian bars in the entire country, and it is OUR space. It has two floors, a fantastic patio for conversation, a dance floor that gets wild on weekends, live music from local female artists, and karaoke nights. The crowd is diverse in age and style. If you only go to one place to feel out the scene, make it Sue's. It's a welcoming rite of passage.

  • When You Want to Branch Out:

    • Bishop Arts District: This is my personal favorite spot. It’s a super charming, walkable neighborhood full of indie bookshops, art galleries, cute boutiques, and amazing restaurants. The vibe is creative, relaxed, and very queer-friendly. Grab a coffee at La Reunion or browse the shelves at The Wild Detectives (a bookstore that's also a bar). You'll find smart, interesting women all over this neighborhood.

    • Deep Ellum: If you’re a little more alternative and love live music, Deep Ellum is your spot. It’s gritty, artsy, and full of concert venues, breweries, and tattoo shops. Catching a show at The Factory or the Granada Theater (on nearby Greenville Ave) is a great way to meet women who share your taste in music.

    • Pop-Up Parties & Events: Keep an eye on Instagram and Eventbrite for sapphic pop-up parties and DJ nights. These are often hosted at various venues around the city and are a fantastic way to meet a ton of women in one night. Following local queer creators and DJs is the best way to stay in the loop.

  • Beyond the Nightlife:

    • Sports Leagues: This is the L-Word stereotype for a reason—it works! Joining a softball league with the Pegasus Slowpitch Softball Association (PSSA) or finding a queer-friendly soccer or volleyball league is an amazing, low-pressure way to meet women. You build camaraderie over a season, which can easily blossom into something more.

    • Get Outdoorsy: On a nice day, White Rock Lake is bustling with women walking their dogs, kayaking, running, and cycling. The dog park here is an easy A+ for starting conversations. For more serious hiking, check out Cedar Ridge Preserve just south of Dallas.

Dallas Landmarks (So You Sound Like a Local on Your Date)

Knowing a few key spots will make you feel more at home and will definitely impress a date.

  • The Rainbow Crosswalks: Located at the intersection of Cedar Springs and Throckmorton in the heart of Oak Lawn, this is the most important landmark for our community. It’s a beautiful symbol of our pride and presence in the city.

  • Reunion Tower (The "Ball"): The most iconic part of the skyline. The view from the top is genuinely stunning, especially at night.

  • The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden: Sixty-six acres of pure beauty on the shore of White Rock Lake. It’s romantic, peaceful, and gorgeous in any season.

  • Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge: The stunning white bridge that has become a modern symbol of Dallas. It's best viewed from the Trinity Groves area, which is a great date spot itself.

  • Klyde Warren Park: A beautiful green space built right over a freeway, connecting the Arts District and Uptown. It’s always full of people, food trucks, and free events.

My Favorite Romantic Date Spots

Okay, you’ve swiped right on HER or caught someone's eye at Sue's. Where do you take her?

  • First Date - Casual, Cute & Conversation-Focused:

    • A Brewery Date: Dallas has a great craft beer scene. Head to a place with a cool patio and a relaxed vibe like Peticolas Brewing Company or Deep Ellum Brewing Company. It’s casual, fun, and less intense than a formal dinner.

    • Picnic at White Rock Lake: This is a top-tier move. Pack a cute basket with snacks from Central Market, a blanket, and maybe a bottle of wine. It’s thoughtful, romantic, and lets you have a real conversation without distractions.

    • Thrifting in Deep Ellum or on Lower Greenville: A fun, activity-based date that takes the pressure off. Exploring vintage stores tells you a lot about a person's style and sense of humor.

  • The "Okay, This Is Getting Real" Date:

    • Dinner with Ambiance: Take her somewhere beautiful. RH Rooftop in Knox/Henderson feels like you’re dining in a glamorous greenhouse. Le Bilboquet is a chic French spot perfect for feeling fancy. Paradiso in Bishop Arts has a stunning patio that feels like a European vacation.

    • Catch a Show: Go beyond a movie. Get tickets for a concert at the Kessler Theater (an intimate, historic venue in Oak Cliff) or see a touring Broadway show at the Winspear Opera House in the Arts District.

  • The Fun & Uniquely Queer Date:

    • Drag Brunch: It’s a universal queer good time. The energy is infectious, the performances are incredible, and it’s a perfect way to spend a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. Check out the shows at the Rose Room at S4 or find a brunch hosted by a local queen.

    • Dancing at Sue Ellen's: A date night at Sue's is a rite of passage. Whether you’re catching a live band or dancing to the DJ upstairs, it's a fun, high-energy way to celebrate being in our space together.

Dating in Dallas as a queer woman is an adventure. The community is warm, and there are so many of us here creating the world we want to see. Be brave, be yourself, and don't be afraid to compliment her awesome jacket.

And remember, try not to bring a U-Haul on the second date... unless the vibe is just that right. Good luck out there!
