Megan's Dating Tip: Be happy. Don't let dating stress you out or define you. Enjoy the process and the journey, not just the destination. Remember that dating is supposed to be fun and rewarding, not a chore or a competition.

Hey ladies,

Let's talk about what it’s like to date as a queer woman in San Diego. This city is an absolute paradise, but let's be real—finding our community can sometimes feel like trying to find parking at the beach on a sunny Saturday. We don't have a ton of dedicated, full-time lesbian bars, but our scene is vibrant, creative, and strong. We’ve gotten really good at creating our own spaces.

As someone who's navigated it all, from the awkward app dates to finding my amazing circle of friends, here is my personal guide to meeting incredible women and planning dates that truly capture the magic of this city.

Where to Meet Queer Women (Our Spots)

You have to be intentional. The great thing is, when you find your people here, it’s a real and wonderful connection. Here’s where to look.

1. The Community Hubs & Nightlife:

  • Gossip Grill: This is our home base in Hillcrest. It’s one of the last remaining women-centric bars on the West Coast, and we are so lucky to have it. It’s truly for everyone in the community, but it’s owned by women and has always been a space where women feel at home. The front patio is perfect for a chill afternoon drink, and the back patio and dance floor come alive at night. Their themed parties and drag king shows are a must.

  • MO's Universe (Hillcrest): While Urban MO's is a general LGBTQ+ hotspot, it's so big and social that it's a great place to go with a group of friends. You'll always find other queer women on the patio. Their sister bar, Gossip Grill, is right across the street, making it easy to hop between the two.

  • The Casbah: This isn't a gay bar, but this legendary indie music venue in Little Italy draws a super inclusive, progressive, and often very queer crowd, especially for certain artists. If you want to meet a woman who loves music, this is a great place to strike up a conversation between sets.

2. The Daytime & Active Scene:

  • North Park & South Park: These are the ultimate cool-girl neighborhoods. On a weekend afternoon, the coffee shops (like Communal Coffee), breweries, and independent boutiques are full of creative and interesting women. It feels less like a "scene" and more like a neighborhood where you can genuinely connect with someone.

  • Ocean Beach (OB): If you're looking for a more laid-back, bohemian, and sun-kissed woman, OB is your spot. The OB Farmers Market on Wednesdays is a fantastic social event. The dog beach is another prime location—our community loves their rescue dogs, and it’s the easiest icebreaker in the world.

  • San Diego Waves Women's Flag Football League: Want to meet a woman who is active, competitive, and a team player? Join a women's sports league. The flag football league is incredibly popular and has built a really strong community of queer women. It’s an amazing way to make friends and potentially meet a partner.

3. Events & Pop-Ups:

  • Hera Collective & BabeShack: Keep a close eye on Instagram for these event promoters! They throw fantastic pop-up parties, takeovers, and events specifically for queer women and the wider sapphic community. These are often the best places to meet single women because everyone is there for the same reason: to connect with their community.

San Diego Landmarks (The Backdrop for Your Story)

Knowing your city is always attractive. These are the iconic spots that make San Diego, San Diego.

  • Balboa Park: The absolute jewel of our city. It's a massive park with stunning Spanish Colonial architecture, over 17 museums, incredible gardens (the Alcazar Garden and Japanese Friendship Garden are my favorites), and the world-famous San Diego Zoo.

  • Sunset Cliffs Natural Park: In OB, these dramatic, rugged cliffs offer the most breathtaking sunset views. It’s a spiritual experience and the perfect place to feel the power of the Pacific.

  • La Jolla Cove: An incredibly picturesque cove famous for its turquoise water and the hundreds of sea lions and seals that sunbathe on the rocks and beach. It's a beautiful reminder of the amazing nature surrounding us.

  • Hotel del Coronado: The iconic, red-roofed Victorian hotel on Coronado Island. It’s a historic landmark that’s just as grand and magical in person as it is in photos.

  • Cabrillo National Monument: At the tip of Point Loma, this spot offers what is hands-down the best panoramic view of the entire San Diego skyline, the bay, and the ocean.

The Perfect San Diego Date

You've matched, you've chatted, and now it's time for a date that’s as amazing as she is.

First Date (Casual, Fun & Chemistry-Check):

  • A Walk & Wine in South Park: This neighborhood is adorable and full of charm. Meet at The Rose Wine Bar for a glass of something interesting, and then take a walk down Fern Street, popping into the cute indie shops.

  • Sunset Picnic at Calumet Park: This is a lesser-known gem in Bird Rock. It’s a quiet, grassy park right on the cliffs overlooking the ocean. Grab some tacos or a cheese board, bring a blanket, and just talk as you watch the sun go down. It's intimate and beautiful.

  • Explore the Little Italy Mercato: On a Saturday morning, this farmers market is a vibrant, bustling experience. You can wander through the stalls, sample local foods, and grab a coffee. It’s a low-pressure activity that gives you plenty to talk about.

A More "Wow" Factor Date:

  • Dinner at a Place with a View:George's at the Cove in La Jolla has an Ocean Terrace with world-class views of the coastline. For something in the city, The Nolen is a rooftop bar with fire pits and a fantastic view of the downtown skyline.

  • A Show at The Old Globe: Located in Balboa Park, this Tony Award-winning theatre is a cultural treasure. Getting a little dressed up to see a play, especially in their outdoor theater under the stars, feels incredibly romantic and sophisticated.

  • Kayaking the La Jolla Sea Caves: Rent a double kayak and explore the seven sea caves together. It’s an adventure, a great workout, and an unforgettable shared experience where you have to work as a team.

Unique & Memorable Dates:

  • Art & Beer in Barrio Logan: Explore the incredible murals at Chicano Park, a National Historic Landmark, and then head to Border X Brewing or Mujeres Brew House for a craft beer. It’s a date rich in culture, art, and community.

  • Ferry to Coronado: Take the ferry from downtown to Coronado Island. Rent a surrey bike (the four-wheeled ones with the canopy) and pedal along the stunning coastline. It's charming, a little bit silly, and incredibly fun.

  • Build a Bonfire at Moonlight Beach: Head up to Encinitas, grab some firewood, and claim one of the fire pits on the beach. Watching the stars come out with the sound of the waves and the warmth of a fire is pure magic.

Dating in San Diego is all about embracing the beautiful, active, and creative spirit of the city. Put yourself out there, enjoy this incredible place we get to call home, and you’ll find your person.

Hope to see you out there!
